"It's such an honor to be here among so many amazing women," Hudson said as a toast, before rushing off to rehearse her performance for this year's Oscars. Among the honorees onstage were Meryl Streep (who entered to a "Meryl Streep is in the house!" greeting from Schulman and was surrounded by a circle of admirers thereafter), Laura Dern and Rosamund Pike. However, most of the women in the photo weren't onscreen talent: There was a mix of production designers, directors and producers who wore the symbolic Women In Film corsages reserved for Oscar nominees. Schulman said that she has seen a bigger number of women working behind the scenes in the film industry, specifically in producing. "'Producers' is the single fasting-growing group of women as regards to the movie business," said Schulman, a producer herself. "I think that's cool, because the producer is in charge of the whole thing." Writer/actress Lake Bell has also seen some more females behind the camera of late. "It's rare to have a lady DP (director of photography), but there are more female DPs coming into the mix now than I've ever heard," she said. Other mingling partygoers included Elle Fanning, Kate Walsh, Kate Flannery, Karla Souza, Emily Ratajkowski, Jamie Chung and Michelle Monaghan, who chatted it up with Rosamund Pike. As for women who'd like to be among the event honorees, Hudson offered this advice (before she left): "Whatever it is you aspire to do, dream to do. If you keep at it, it has no choice but to give in. Do it for the love, and everything else will come." |
