Ed Ruscha, Meryl Streep, Jake Gyllenhaal, Patti Smith, Rick Owens—those are just a few of the famous names who appear in and collaborated on the first-ever issue of NeueJournal, which debuts this Thursday. An extension of NeueHouse, the New York-based private work space for the creative set, the 264-page hardcover publication is brimming with inspired original content from designers, actors, artists, musicians, and more. But it’s legendary lenswoman Brigitte Lacombe’s work for the book, including the seven covers (featuring Streep, Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright, and more) and a number of editorials, that particularly caught our eye.
Lacombe, who currently has her Complicities exhibition on display at Phillips in Manhattan, has photographed some of the most iconic stars in Hollywood during her 40-year career. One of her favorite subjects is Streep; theirs is a friendship that kicked off back in 1978 on the set of Kramer vs. Kramer. (A portrait from that shoot appears in the first issue of the biannual pub.) Three and a half decades later, Lacombe is still busy capturing Streep’s timeless beauty.
“I was very taken by Meryl right away…so luminous and unique-looking, intense and joyous, too,” Lacombe tells Style.com. “The shoot was for the poster of the film. It was very low key, Dustin [Hoffman] making everyone laugh.” To accompany Lacombe’s images in the story, Streep was asked by editor in chief Michelle Grey and editorial/creative director Dominic Teja Sidhu to describe her friend Lacombe. “Being photographed by her is the only time I don’t mind being photographed—in other situations I feel like a performing elephant,” she writes. “I feel like I don’t have to do anything. She does all the work.” Of Lacombe’s sharp eye, Streep says, “She always sees the elegant line, the dignity of a stooped posture or the aggressive grace of an uptight one. She is tirelessly interested in the human face and never stops discovering surprises in every one.” When we asked Lacombe to describe Streep, she said, “I find her to be an extraordinary woman, mother, friend, and of course, actress. Very engaged in the world, honest, direct, and ethical.”

Here, an exclusive first look at Lacombe’s most recent portrait of Streep, captured in her Lower East Side studio this past spring.
