Her D.N.C. dress will give you déjà vu.
Meryl Streep: actress, Oscar-winner, humanist, extreme patriot. We know that last qualifier is exceptionally true from her wardrobe choice for her appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Streep arrived at the podium wearing an American flag shirt dress in a gauzy chiffon, which appeared almost tailor-made for the occasion. What else does one wear to introduce the first-ever female nominee for president? Why, you deck yourself in Old Glory! Betsy Ross herself (we’re going according to legend here; this isn’t time for protests about how and Ross probably didn’t make the first American flag) couldn’t have sewn a more appropriate or patriotic outfit. But perhaps Streep’s dress had you rubbing your eyes and thinking, “Wait a gosh darn minute, I’ve seen those stars and stripes before—and not just on every flagpole in the United States.” Well, friend, you’re right. You’ve seen this dress on one Meryl Streep.

Streep first wore the Catherine Malandrino dress in 2009. At the time, she was attending a photocall in Paris for the movie Doubt. What it was about being at a movie premiere in France that screamed “stars and stripes forever” to Meryl Streep we’ll never know, but that’s exactly what she wore. The Malandrino dress had actually been in existence for awhile, with Halle Berry being the first celebrity to wear it on a press tour for Swordfish in 2001. Many other celebrities have donned it since, and Katy Perry wore the dress for the fourth of July (which she celebrated with John Mayer … ah, memories) in 2013.

The key takeaway here, though, is that most of those women wore the flag dress once and then were never seen in it again. Meryl Streep wore it in 2009 and then held onto it for seven years. She owns that American flag dress. It sits in her closet, just waiting for another moment in the sun. Tonight, it had that moment. Streep called upon the dress to enhance the optics of what she was saying when she stressed to convention attendees and viewers why they should support and vote for Hillary Clinton. The flag dress once again did its patriotic duty. We salute you—and it—Meryl Streep.
